Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, are small, painful sores that develop inside the mouth, on the tongue, lips, gums, or inner cheeks. While most ulcers heal on their own within a week or two, frequent, large, or persistent ulcers may indicate an underlying health condition and require professional dental evaluation.

At our clinic, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and effective treatment for mouth ulcers. Our experienced dental team identifies the root cause of recurring ulcers and offers personalized treatment to relieve pain, promote faster healing, and prevent future occurrences.

What Are Mouth Ulcers?

Mouth ulcers are shallow sores that develop on the soft tissues inside the mouth. They are usually white, yellow, or gray in the center with a red border. Although they are not contagious, they can cause significant discomfort while eating, drinking, or speaking.

Common Symptoms of Mouth Ulcers

  • Painful sores inside the mouth
  • Burning or tingling sensation
  • Difficulty eating spicy or acidic foods
  • Pain while talking or swallowing
  • Swollen or inflamed surrounding tissue
  • Redness around the ulcer
  • White or yellow patches inside the ulcer
  • Bad breath in some cases
  • Difficulty brushing due to pain
  • Recurring mouth sores

Common Causes of Mouth Ulcers

Minor Injuries

Accidental cheek bites, aggressive brushing, or irritation from braces and dentures can lead to mouth ulcers.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Low levels of Vitamin B12, Iron, Folic Acid, or Zinc may contribute to recurring ulcers.

Stress and Anxiety

Physical and emotional stress can trigger ulcer formation in many individuals.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations may increase the likelihood of mouth ulcers, particularly in women.

Food Sensitivity

Certain foods such as spicy dishes, citrus fruits, or acidic beverages may irritate the mouth and cause ulcers.

Viral or Bacterial Infections

Some infections can cause painful ulcers or sores inside the mouth.

Medical Conditions

Recurring ulcers may be associated with digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases, or weakened immunity.

Types of Mouth Ulcers

Minor Mouth Ulcers

The most common type, usually healing within 7–14 days without leaving scars.

Major Mouth Ulcers

Larger and deeper ulcers that may take several weeks to heal and can leave scars.

Herpetiform Ulcers

Multiple tiny ulcers that appear in clusters and may merge into larger sores.

Diagnosis

Our dentist performs a detailed oral examination and reviews your medical history to determine the underlying cause of the ulcers. Additional blood tests or investigations may be recommended if ulcers recur frequently or persist for an extended period.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the ulcers and may include:

  • Topical pain-relief gels
  • Antiseptic mouthwash
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements
  • Prescription medications for severe ulcers
  • Treatment of underlying infections
  • Dietary and lifestyle recommendations
